Chief Program Officer
Role Overview
A mission-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing justice and preventing wrongful convictions is seeking a Chief Program Officer to oversee key program areas and support the organization’s strategic impact. This senior leadership role will guide teams responsible for research, litigation, policy, and social work, ensuring alignment across programs while maintaining a strong focus on equity, collaboration, and operational excellence. The Chief Program Officer will partner closely with the Executive Director and senior leadership team to advance the organization’s mission and strengthen program effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities

Provide leadership and strategic oversight across core program areas, including research, litigation, policy, and social work

Partner with the Executive Director and senior leadership team to advance organizational strategy and program priorities

Guide and support Program Directors to ensure alignment, collaboration, and effective program execution

Foster cross-department collaboration to strengthen communication and operational efficiency

Support development of legal and policy strategies related to ongoing litigation and advocacy efforts

Manage program budgets in partnership with leadership to ensure responsible resource allocation

Cultivate and maintain relationships with external partners, including legal organizations and advocacy groups

Serve as a public-facing representative of the organization as needed

Mentor and supervise program leaders, promoting a high-performing and inclusive team culture

Develop systems and processes that support strong program management and continuous improvement
Qualifications
-
15+ years of professional experience, including significant leadership and team management experience

Juris Doctor (JD) preferred
-
Background or familiarity with criminal justice, litigation, policy, or related fields

Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity, and public interest work

Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
-
Experience managing complex projects and balancing multiple priorities

Ability to build collaborative relationships across teams and external partners

Excellent analytical, research, and problem-solving abilities
Compensation & Schedule

Full-time position

Hybrid schedule with required in-office days in New York City

Competitive salary and benefits package offered up to 270K, based on experience
