Manuscript Development Assistant
Our client, a prominent philanthropic organization, is seeking a Manuscript Development Assistant to support a Senior Manager on a special project. This part-time role will provide hands-on editorial and administrative support throughout the manuscript development process, helping organize and refine content, coordinate revisions, and prepare materials for review or publication.
The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer and editor with strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and experience working with complex written materials. A background in publishing, journalism, law, or a similarly writing-intensive environment would be particularly relevant.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with structuring, organizing, and refining manuscript content at the direction of the author.
- Edit and proofread for grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity, consistency, and formatting.
- Conduct fact-checking and organize reference materials, citations, and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate revisions between the author and editorial consultant.
- Manage edits, version control, project timelines, and deadlines.
- Prepare manuscripts according to applicable editorial or publishing guidelines.
- Proofread final drafts prior to review or publication.
- Provide administrative and project support throughout the manuscript development process.
- Handle manuscript content and related information with discretion and confidentiality.
Qualifications
- Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational abilities.
- Ability to independently manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Experience in publishing, journalism, law, communications, or another writing-intensive field is a plus.
- Master’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Publishing, or a related field preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace, including Microsoft Word Track Changes.
- Familiarity with APA, MLA, Chicago, or other manuscript formatting guidelines preferred.
- Fact-checking experience is a plus.
- Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat and project management tools such as Asana, Trello, or Monday.com is helpful.
- Strong judgment and discretion when working with confidential materials.
Schedule
This is a part-time, temporary hybrid position based in the Rockefeller Center area of New York City. Hours are still being determined, and occasional weekend availability may be needed around project or publication deadlines.
